To accomplish his goal, Cartetr hopes to actively engage Charlotte’s business community, beginninh with a reception next week hosted byWachovisa Corp. He wants to learn what employers look for in He saysthe institution’s research will be focused on communit and business needs. And Carterd hopes to play an active role advocating for the campuss to be connectedto uptown. Carter recently spokw to the Charlotte Business Journakl abouthis plans. Following are edited excerpts.
How important is your relationship with thecorporate community? It is extremely importan that Johnson C. Smith be hand in glovde with the business and corporate communityyin Charlotte. My vision is for Johnson C. Smith to become the nation’xs premier, independent urban university. For that to happen, especiall y with the emphasis on we must be partnerss with all the organizations and institutions that are making Charlottsa world-class city. How will you foster that relationship ? One area will be curriculum. We want to bringy Charlotte’s employers to the table to understand what knowledge base they want theifr employeesto have.
I’m very serious and the deanse are very serious about meeting with businesas leaders to learn what employers arelookiny for. We also want to develop the Johnsobn C. Smith Institute of Applied Research as a resourcde for the community that can reacnh out and research the issues our socialo organizations and businesses need usto study. Will you reachy out to the corporate community forfinancial support? If I can get the businessd community engaged and they see the benefits we offerf their community, I think they’ll want to work with us. I see Johnson C. Smith as a business committed to education that delivers highly competent employeesto employers.
I want businesses to see the valu ofJohnson C. Smith to this community. Our studentds spend money here; our faculty spends money The university invests money inthe community. I’m coming to the business communityt as apartner saying, “Yoj invest in me, and we’ll invest in What role will you take in the redevelopmentt of northwest Charlotte? We’re goinhg to be very active. I’m not sure we’ve been as active as we should have been inthe past. I want the footprinyt of center city to come past Interstate 77 and rightf to the doorstep ofJohnson C. Smit University.
When you’re driving down Trade Streetf and you cross underthat bridge, there is a suddenm change. That shouldn’t happen. We’re talking about four-tenths of a mile. I want to startt more conversations about redevelopment because there shouldc be no disconnect from centerf city to ourbeautiful campus. How will you promot e diversityin Charlotte’s business community?? We’ll research diversity in business and education. One of my goalds is to make Johnson C. Smith the nation’s premief source for information ondiversitty issues.
When anyone wants to see or hear about diversitty and its role in a workplace or we want to be able tosay that’s our specialtyh and we get it right.
